]]>When I worked for MySQL AB, Sweden was ever present. MySQL AB was headquartered in Uppsala, Sweden just north of Stockholm and so I always wanted to visit. I'm happy that I did, Sweden is a beautiful place even in the off-season of Autumn. What's missing here is the night at the Swedish Opera House. Stunning.

Iceland

]]>Iceland is a place that has long held a fascination for me. Maybe it's the volcanos, maybe it's the location just under the Arctic Circle. Iceland is definitely one of my favourite places in the world and I can say that from only having visited for barely a week and maybe a 1/10 of the island. From the fantastic Blue Lagoon to the waterfalls at Geysir and the black sand beaches under the probably-soonish-erupting Katla volcano at Vik, Iceland is just pure magnificence!

Ireland

]]>I have always had a love affair with Ireland. I associate most strongly with Newfoundland in Canada which has strong Irish roots and so, when I won tickets to Ireland courtesy of a contest at O'Byrnes Pub in Edmonton, Alberta in 2009, it was a no-brainer to ask my friend and Empire Avenue co-Founder Mike Mannion to go to Ireland for St. Patrick's Day in 2010. Mike was born in Ireland and the opportunity meant I had a chance to travel Ireland visiting locals. We went from Dublin to Waterford to Galway and all around county Galway and the west coast. Ireland is just purely magnificent.

]]>In 2009 and 2010 I visited parts of France, from Clermant Ferrand in the centre, to Grenoble and St. Bernard de Touvet, a small village nestled high up in the French alps, all the way down to Marseilles in the south. The trip was my first to spend any extensive amount of time in France and allowed me a chance to visit friends and their families from north to south. French hospitality was amazing and the vistas stunning ... But most impressive was of course, the cheeses and the wines!

]]>In 2006 I crossed Russia with the Trans-Siberian express. In the middle of the train trip however, I decided to join a friend of mine, Keli Ryan, and climbed Mt. Elbrus near Russia's border with Georgia. An unforgettable journey which encompassed the Caucuses, Moscow and Siberia chained together by the unbelievable Trans-Siberian Railway.
